Overview
All Alaska Staff Development Network (ASDN) distance education courses are approved by an accredited Alaskan university as 500-Level, professional development courses, and are approved by the State of Alaska for teacher re-certification (with the exception of paraprofessional courses, which are noted as being lower-level credit).
Our Alaska History and Multicultural distance education courses meet the State’s requirements for Alaska Teacher Certification.
Although our courses are accepted by the state as upper division (500-Level) credits, they are for Professional Development only and cannot be used toward a degree. If you’re not sure what courses you’re required to complete to maintain your certification, or to qualify for certification within the State of Alaska, click on the link to the Teacher Certification website below:

Pre-requisites
Universities require that you at least have a Bachelors degree to register for a 500-Level course. Therefore, when you register online and are selecting your highest degree earned, the only options are BA/BS, MA/MS, or PHD. Please do not register for a 500-Level course if you do not meet the pre-requisite.
If you are registering for a lower-level paraprofessional course (indicated in the course title or description), you can just leave “select status” in the highest degree earned field of the online registration form.
How to get started
Select the course that you’re interested in taking from our list of Distance Education course offerings and read the course description. Once you’ve decided that you do want to register, click on the “Register Now” link within the course description. We do require sensitive information and therefore all of our registrations are via secure web forms.
After you’ve submitted the online registration form, you will have an opportunity to print what you submitted for your records. It usually takes 1-3 days for us to process your registration and send you an official confirmation email. The confirmation email will give you your exact registration date, instructor contact information, as well as other information on how to get started on the course. Please save this email for your records. Your course instructor will receive a copy of your confirmation email, and will add you to their participant list.
If your course includes materials (or you’ve selected to purchase materials for your course), your materials will arrive anywhere from 3-5 days after you receive your confirmation email.
Financial Aid
ASDN courses are 500-level professional development courses. They are offered in partnership with accredited Alaskan universities, but enrollment in a professional development course is not the same as enrolling in a university degree program. For that reason, we regret that we can not accept most military or tribal financial aid programs. Please contact us if you have questions regarding a scholarship or financial aid program.
ASDN does not offer any financial aid or scholarship programs. However, staff from school districts who are ASDN sponsors do receive discounts on selected programs. Click here to see if your school district is a member of our network.
