How Do ASDN Online Courses Work?

All Alaska Staff Development Network (ASDN) online courses are approved by an accredited Alaskan university as 500-level, professional development courses, and are approved by the State of Alaska for teacher re-certification (with the exception of paraprofessional courses, which are noted as being lower-level credit).

Our Alaska History and Multicultural courses meet the State’s requirements for Alaska teacher certification.

Although our courses are accepted by the state as upper division (500-level) credits, they are for professional development only and typically cannot be used toward a degree or accepted as a 600-level class.

If you’re not sure what courses you’re required to complete to maintain your certification, or to qualify for certification within the State of Alaska, visit the Department of Education and Early Development’s Teacher Certification webpage.

If you are looking to use these classes to move up the salary scale, be sure to contact your district’s professional development department to ensure that your class will be eligible.

Universities require that you at least have a Bachelors degree to register for a 500-Level course. Therefore, when you register online and are selecting your highest degree earned, the only options are BA/BS, MA/MS, or PHD. Please do not register for a 500-Level course if you do not meet the pre-requisite.

How to get started
Select the course that you’re interested in taking from our list of online course offerings and read the course description. Once you’ve decided that you do want to register, click on the “Register Now” button. We do require sensitive information and therefore all of our registrations are via secure web forms.

After you’ve submitted the online registration form, you will have an opportunity to print what you submitted for your records. After you register, you will receive a confirmation email that will give you your registration date, instructor contact information, as well as other information on how to get started on the course. Please save this email for your records. Your course instructor will receive a copy of your confirmation email, and will add you to their participant list.

Financial Aid
ASDN courses are 500-level professional development courses. They are offered in partnership with accredited Alaskan universities, but enrollment in a professional development course is not the same as enrolling in a university degree program. For that reason, we regret that we can not accept most military or tribal financial aid programs.

ASDN does not offer any financial aid or scholarship programs. However, staff from school districts who are ASDN Tier One Sponsors  do receive discounts on selected programs and classes.
