Communicating Across Cultures with Father Oleksa

Communicating Across Cultures

May 21-23, 2012 with online follow up work

Join the Rev. Dr. Michael Oleksa, a leader in the development of cross-cultural communication in Alaska and student of Native cultures for Communicating Across Cultures a three credit, 500-level multicultural education course this summer. This course meets Alaska Department of Education and Early Development requirements for teacher certification and re-certification. This course has been approved by the Anchorage School District.  Over a thousand Alaskan educators have participated in Father Oleksa’s ASDN classes over the last fifteen years.
The session begins with two-and-a-half days of instruction from Father Oleksa in Anchorage, and is completed online. The follow-up work must be completed online. A working email address and access to the Internet are required.Communicating Across Cultures participants will take a half-day, self-guided field trip to the Alaska Native Heritage Center as part of this class.  All other activities will take place at the BP Energy Center in Anchorage.

This class applies current research on instruction for increasing student achievement and supports approaches for effectively implementing these strategies in the classroom.

Building Responsive Learning Communities

Join former ASD principals Jim and Diana Kurka for a course that implements strategies based on the principles of a strong professional learning community in order to launch your school into effective RTI strategies. This course supports K-12 administrators and teacher leaders in developing a responsive school environment, building collaborative teams, brainstorming solutions to common problems and supporting colleagues while implementing culturally responsive practices. Participants will engage in an action-oriented class that focuses on intervention, not remediation. Responsive learning communities create a school-wide system of interventions to provide students support when they experience difficulties. The goal is simply not learning a new system, but creating conditions for perpetual learning.

EED Summer Literacy Institute

May 23-25 – Anchorage

Register online for the 2012 Summer Literacy Institute: Rigorous Reading Instruction on the University of Alaska Anchorage campus. The institute is designed to support teachers to help ensure that all children learn know how to read and write at a high level, to access, synthesize and evaluate information and to communicate their findings and ideas effectively.

Content offered is linked to the Alaska Literacy Blueprint and will be presented in three strands: Birth to School Age, Kindergarten to Grade 5, and Grade 6 to Graduation.

There is no registration fee, lunch will be provided each day (travel and lodging is the responsibility of attendee). University credit is available through Alaska Pacific University.

This institute is being offered to any teacher, paraprofessional, preschool, day care provider or head start employee in the state.
